After a long stressful day at work sometimes I would head to Sushi Haru (鮨春) and indulge myself to some high quality sushi. When most sushi restaurants come to an end, Sushi Haru gets this party started up till 2:00 AM every day. Located just below Club Obama and surrounded by other mediocre establishment between the intersection of Yan An Xi Road and Yili Road.

Don’t let the location fool you. Sushi Haru has their majority of its fish flown in from Japan and nigiri’s handmade by the Japanese chef and owner himself during prime hours. They don’t offer an English menu even their Chinese menu is fairly limited. So either you know your sushi terms in Japanese really well or bring someone that knows the language. Another alternative is to just ask for the chef to build you a set course. Trust me the value is MUCH better if you order a set course (pretty much 30% off compared to A La Carte). Whether if its nigiri only or a full-set consist of starts, hot-cold dishes, sashimi and nigiri; the chef is a lot more generous with the set-course than if you ordered A La Carte. (The set comes at a price of 400,500 and 600 RMB).

Great value can also be found with their lunch sets on the weekends coming at 150-200 RMB. I ordered the premium chirashi which comes with a huge slice of chu-toro, flounder, botan shrimp, red snapper, uni, salmon and more.

They don’t just toss some leftovers and call it their side dish. Yuzu salad, cold noodles, edamame, takuan (Japanese yellow pickles) are all good in quality, and their chawanmushi is one of the best in town.

You have to order their Uni nigiri when you’re at Sushi Haru. It’s their signature dish, and highly recommended by fattoro. A more than generous portion of Japanese flown uni that’s overflowing the entire area of white rice like its being wrapped by uni, hand served to you. The quality is top-notch and they added a bit of wasabi to give it that extra kick.

And a complimentary green tea ice cream. Delicious but not homemade.

Last Note: Sushi Haru sits about 10 people on in their sushi counter with three private rooms. This isn’t a fancy place like Oyama but feels quite relax. Reservations are pretty much required. I normally order a 350/400 rmb nigiri set which never disappoints. I strongly recommend going during main hours 6:00-9:00 pm because the Japanese chef makes the nigiri’s himself. Quality is more inconsistent later. I also love their complimentary wasabi cucumber that they serve. Yeah, I’m a regular here.
